Certification of organic products in Ukraine: standards, procedure, and prospects for agribusiness

Сертифікація органічної продукції в Україні: стандарти, процедура та перспективи для аграрного бізнесу
Organic production in Ukraine in 2026 will no longer be a fashionable trend or a niche experiment for individual farmers. It will be a fully-fledged segment of the agricultural market with clear rules, controls, and real financial prospects. Demand for organic products is growing steadily both domestically and abroad, especially in European markets. At the same time, the right to label products as organic directly depends on certification. Without official confirmation, the use of the “organic” label is illegal and entails financial and reputational risks for the producer.

1. What is organic certification and its significance?

Organic certification is a procedure that confirms that products are produced in compliance with organic standards at all stages: from soil preparation and cultivation to storage, processing, and labeling. It covers not only the final product, but also the entire production process.

For agribusiness, certification is the legal basis for entering the organic market, building consumer trust, and accessing the premium price segment. In fact, it is a tool for legally positioning products as organic.

2. Ukrainian legislation on organic production

In Ukraine, organic production is regulated by separate legislation that is harmonized with European approaches. The state sets requirements for the cultivation of plant products, animal husbandry, processing, transportation, and labeling of organic goods.

A key element of the system is mandatory control by accredited certification bodies and registration of organic market operators. This means that any producer claiming organic status for their products must undergo official verification and regularly confirm compliance with the established requirements.

3. Requirements for obtaining organic certification

To obtain organic certification, producers must meet a number of mandatory requirements. These include refraining from using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, and GMOs; using approved organic production methods; and ensuring full product traceability.

The so-called transition period (conversion) plays a special role, during which the farm transitions from traditional production to organic production. The duration of this period depends on the type of production and the condition of the land, but without it, certification is not possible.

4. The difference between Ukrainian and European organic certification

The Ukrainian organic certification system is based on principles similar to those in Europe. At the same time, EU organic has additional requirements that are important for export-oriented producers to consider.

The main difference lies in the format of control, documentation requirements, and labeling. To enter the EU market, Ukrainian manufacturers must either obtain certification according to European standards or confirm the equivalence of Ukrainian certificates to EU requirements.

5. Step-by-step procedure for certifying organic products

The organic certification process usually includes the following steps:

  • selection of an accredited certification body;
  • submission of an application and description of production processes;
  • document analysis;
  • inspection of the farm;
  • sampling (if necessary);
  • decision-making and issuance of the certificate.

After receiving the certificate, the manufacturer is subject to ongoing monitoring and undergoes annual inspections.

6. What products can be certified as organic?

In Ukraine, organic production covers a wide range of products. These include grains, vegetables, fruits, berries, oilseeds, honey, dairy products, meat, eggs, and processed products.

It is important to understand that not only the product itself is considered organic, but also the conditions under which it is produced. Therefore, even traditional crops can only obtain organic status if they fully comply with the standards.

7. Certification bodies in Ukraine: how to choose

Choosing a certification body is a critical step for farmers. It is necessary to check for accreditation, experience with a specific product category, and the ability to provide support during export.

Practice shows that cooperation with internationally recognized bodies greatly simplifies further entry into foreign markets.

8. Deadlines, costs, and checks

The duration of the certification process depends on the type of product and the readiness of the farm. On average, initial environmental certification in Ukraine takes from several months to a year, taking into account the conversion period.

The cost is determined individually and depends on the size of the farm, the number of production processes, and the frequency of inspections. The certificate requires annual confirmation.

9. Benefits of organic certification for export

For exporters, organic certification opens up access to stable EU markets, where demand for organic products significantly exceeds supply. Organic status allows products to be sold at higher prices and long-term contracts to be concluded with international partners.

In addition to financial benefits, certification enhances brand reputation and trust among importers.

10. Labeling and sale of organic products

After receiving the certificate, the manufacturer has the right to use the corresponding marking. It must comply with the requirements of the standards and contain information about the certification body.

Incorrect or unauthorized use of organic labeling is considered a violation of the law and may result in fines and a ban on the sale of products.

Organic certification is not a formality, but a strategic decision for agricultural businesses planning growth and export. To avoid mistakes and unnecessary costs, it is advisable to involve specialists at the stage of preparation for certification.
